This is the 2nd prequilted prototype I have available.

It’s quilted as Black Momentum90-3 oz PL1-scrim-Aegean Blue Momentum90.  Primaloft 1 has a clo of 0.84/oz, which means the 3 oz layer has a clo of 3.0*0.84=2.5 .  This’d be enough insulation for 3 season items.

This initial run has the same error the prequilt 6 oz PL1: my quilter put shiny side out on the two layers of momentum.  D’oh!  This is a purely cosmetic issue.
Also, there is a layer of scrim in there which adds a few tenths of an ounce per square yard. My quilter is indicating it may not be possible to prequilt without that layer, so the final version of this product may have the scrim layer too.  We’ll see- it’s something I’m working on as I dial in the process.

My initial impressions of these prequilted momentum products is very favorable.  And there is more to come…

I’m going to make this available as part of the official betatest for the new insulated pants project.  Because the material is prequilted, you should be able to use the same procedure to make insulated pants as used to make the uninsulated liberty ridge pants.

If you’re interested in betatesting the new as-yet-unnamed insulated pants kit or want some of this material as cut-goods, let me know by sending me an email, shooting me a PM through the board, or by calling during business hours.

Was wondering if people making quilts or sleeping bags using the prequilted PrimaLoft to Momentum are satisfied with their gear in terms of function and durability?  Any specific issues to using this product vs. long fiber synthetic insulation?

Will Thru-Hiker be carrying this product (Momentum/PrimaLoft prequilted) in the near future?

Need to construct a synthetic warm weather (+60F nights) quilt for hammock camping in a wet environment that compresses down small like down.  Thinking of using PrimaLoft One for its moisture resistance, light weight & compression covered in Momentum.  But without pre-quilting sounds like use of PrimaLoft One is a poor choice for quilts.

I made a synthetic knockoff of the JRB No-Sniveler with one layer of prequilted Momentum-6ozPL1-scrim plus a Momentum shell.  Bought enough to also make a Balaclava and insulated arms to go with it.  It has worked well.  It is so light and fluffy that I was worried about durability but the quilting seems to do the trick.  I like this quilt a lot. For me it doesn’t start needing more insulation til it gets down to 30*F

I would think that 3oz would be much more than warm enough for 60*F sleeping ... too warm for my needs.  2.5oz Climashield XP would be plenty warm for 60*F and with mo scrim weight it’d deliver better clo/oz than 3oz PL1 plus scrim.  Might even compress as small too.  Very little quilting needed with XP.

Thanks Jim for the info.  Plans are to sew a JRB Nest clone using synthetic for warmer and wet environment.  Conditions where I prefer to leave the Nest at home. Copying the Nest design would give the option for use as an under quilt.

Based on clo the 3oz PL1/Momentum would be a bit warm.  But looking at the current 1.8 +0.4 scrim prequilted was thinking that for the little weight savings and additional effort would probably chose the 3 oz PL1 if it becomes available again prequilted to Momentum.

Excuse me for my ignorance.  My sewing has been limited to clothing repair and a few silnylon stuff sacks/Bishop bags.  Does the scrim material on the 1.8oz PL1 need to be covered by another material like Momentum or ripstop nylon on both sides? At 0.2oz per side I’m assuming it’s just a structural material holding the PL1 together.

In Search for info I could not find any posts regarding relative resistance to water absorption and how rapidly the insulation dries between ClimaShield XP and PrimaLoft One.  Any significant difference?  Is it true that PrimaLoft One compresses to ~60-80% of the volume of ClimaShield XP?  If so, in the real world for a finished product when you factor in the PL1 scrim and shell material would the difference in compression of 3oz PL1 vs 2.5oz XP be that significantly different.

I’ve never used gear with exposed scrim instead of a nylon shell but Ayce says that the scrim does not stand up to the exposure.  Having handled scrim, I can see why.

I have not seen info about that (haven’t really looked)

I have never seen a quantitative comparison of the compressibility of PL1 vs XP but having handled both, PL1 is noticeably more compressible.  But I’ve been focusing more on weight than pack volume.  That might be because I can’t seem to fill a 3200ci Granite Gear Virga with my current gear for Apr thru Oct in MN ... a bit more volume is a plus in that situation.

I HAVE been tempted to try the existing 1.8oz PL1 prequilt, replacing one of the scrims with Momentum.  But I’ll probably get over it:-)
